desktop doesn't show in network places

hi.
i just set up a network with my desktop which runs xp pro
and a laptop which runs me.

the laptop shows up in network places but the desktop
does not?

i've been through the trouble shooter a couple times and
tried to reinstall the network from the xp cd. the
desktop still will not show. how do i get the desktop to
show up in network places?

if i install a wireless router and pci card, will this
networking stay intact?
