Desktop display too big for laptop

      11th Oct 2008
my start button and taskbar are barely visible, and the left side icons are
half cut off. using xp pro on a dell latitude d505, tried updating drivers
but no luck. when I hook up an external monitor I dont have the problem on
it, just the notebook.

Then you must use a different resolution when not using an external monitor
than when you are using an external monitor.

only thing that works is 800 x 600 and then I have about a one inch frame
around the edges of the screen that I can't use. Its hard to work like this.

Sounds like you have the wrong refresh rate set on your system when using
the built in screen. What is the make/model of laptop?
