desktop clogged with picture copies

I suddenly have a problem with shortcuts to pictures or copies of pictures
from My Pictures filling all available space on my desktop. I have to
laboriously remove them a few at a time because the shift key grabs the
program icons also.
When I succeed in removing them, they will later appear again, whether they
are in the Recycle Bin or not.
They can even reappear as I'm removing others.

Holding down the Shift key and clicking on icons will select all from the
first to the last. Holding down the Ctrl key allows you to select only the
ones you want to remove.

Also, sometimes when you try dragging the selected items (to the Recycle
Bin, for example), if you release the mouse button before you can drop them
where you want them, sometimes it'll create copies in the source folder.

This problem is really squirrely, Patrick. Sometimes I can only Ctrl+click
one, sometimes two and sometimes 8 or 10 before it drops them again.
But I should have stressed that the main problem is their appearance in the
first place, and then their reappearance. Any ideas on that?

Yeah, I can do that but actually they come in sorted already.
I guess what I should have emphasized is the annoyance of their appearance
in the first place, and what's really annoying is their repeated
reappearance. Have you any clue why this is happening. My Norton AV is always
on and also is set to screen emails.

If you are using any software from your camera or cell phone, try
uninstalling it.

Thanks Ben. No, I always use the Windows app to download camera pics. You do
however make me wonder if the Walgreens software that comes with their photo
CD's. I'll try deleting that now.

Once you figure out why it is happening (sounds like some accident),
almost all the stuff you see on your desktop is just in a folder
belonging you your login. A couple things like Recycle Bin are
controlled differently.

Every user has a Desktop folder and you can manipulate it just like
any other folder.

Mine is similar to:

C:\Documents and Settings\Jose\Desktop

You can navigate to yours, sort, move, rename, delete, etc.

Its all just files and folders.

Thank you, Jose, that was very helpful. It gives me a much faster way to get
rid of the files when they reappear....and they always do.

The wierd thing is that I've removed these files (pics) from the My Pic
directory (including the Recycle Bin) and shortcuts to them still pop up on
the desktop until it's jammed full.

But thanks again.
