Desktop appearance changed after use of a data projector

Hello,

after I've disconnected a data projector from my notebook, previously used
for a presentation, unfortunately not the original appearance of the desktop
was visible, but the resolution and arrangement of icons has changed.

What's the reason for it?
How can it be ensured, that after usage of a data projector the previous
desktop appearance is restored?
