I am unable to open desk top applications that go to the web.

I get an error message saying "unable to open the application". Outlook and
Windows Mail are working ok and I can get to the web sites using Internet
Explorer. My service provider is Verizon DSL.

A second and probably unrelated problem is that I was unable to go back
using system restore. It tried but received the message "unable to restore"
with no details as to why. Thanks,

Len Urban

A1. Those with IE7- and/or IE8-specific questions or comments can post to
and seek support in IE General newsgroup:
microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general

On the web:
http://www.microsoft.com/communities...plorer.general

In your newsreader:
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsof...plorer.general

A2. What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)? If you recently installed IE8, were any
of these applications running in the background when you installed it?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

Sorry for posting to the wrong news group.

I have had Norton 360 since I bought my current computer several years ago.
I keep it updated. It indicates that my computer is protected.

I have not installed IE8.

I have not installed any fire walls or anti-spyware programs.

This newsgroup is dedicated to the Windows Mail program.
Web-related problems should be posted in the Internet Explorer newsgroup:

microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general
