desk top icons

can some1 please help. all the icons on my desk top are the same ie outlook
express.when i right click any other iocon open with it opens the correct
programe then all the icons ghange to that programe.and so on. the only icon
that is as it sould be is the recycle bin. i am running windows xp with
service pack 3.windows defender. and avast antivirus.
