Desk top icons/shortcuts

Lately my icons and shortcuts have started re-aligning themselves in columns
on the lefthand side of ny desk top. If I drag any to another position or
move them in any way they revert to the LHS on start-up, whenever the desk
top is refreshed and occasionally for no apparent good reason. I have
checked all the display settings which seem OK. I know there is software
available to return the icons to previously saved positions but would like to
know why this change in behaviour is happening. I think I am also losing
Cookies as I am having to re-enter some log-in information previously saved
in my computer. Help would be appreciated.

Right-click on the desktop, move the mouse over "Arrange Items By". In
the fly-out menu, are "Auto Arrange" and "Align to Grid" unchecked? If
there's a checkmark beside either, get rid of it.

Same problem here.

I installed a save/restore utility, but its getting worse. And becoming a
real pain.

My system is a DELL 640M laptop 32bit XP. It happens most often when I wake
the laptop from standby or hibernate.

I think my problem is something to do with saving settings. Not only do
desktop icons seem to have a life of their own but other settings problems
are occurring. Log-in info to certain sites is disappearing as is the Quick
Launch tool bar. "Views" always reset to tiles and window size will not
remain as set after opening (ie My docs). Any more ideas, anyone?
