Hello,
I have had to reinstall Windows back to the computer delivery state using
the CD which came with the computer.

It is all fine except that there is an icon on the desk top which will not
allow me to remove it. It is called John which is how I have registered my
computer during the install set up. It tells me that access is denied
whenever I try to do anything with it but it is empty.

It says
Windows Explorer
C:\Documents and Settings\ All Users\Desktop\John is not accessible
Access is denied whenver I click on it.

It is very annoying and I wondered if any body could tell me how I can get
rid of it without damaging anything else.

Try to delete it in Safe Mode and see if you will be able to delete it.
Take the ownership of it and hen delete:
"How to take ownership of a file or folder in Windows XP"

Or you can download this tool and delete with it:
http://www.ccleaner.com

Hi Nass,
Thank you very much indeed for your reply.
I tried to delete the folder ion Safe Mode but it still would not go so I
had a look at the taking ownership notes and began to have a go at that. I
have printed off the notes. Unfortunately the computer seems to have gone
haywire again and will only boot if I restore back a couple of days and then
next time I start it up, it won't boot again.
I am going to do another full reinstall and hopefully then all will be back
to normal.
I have kept your advice in mind in case it still is not right after this
next attempt.
I will let you know how I get on.

Hi John,
Sorry to hear about your trouble, but can't you log in safe mode and rescue
your Files before doing a clean install or Repair/reinstall?.
If you are going ahead then make sure your Hard Drive is healthy by
downloading the Diagnostic tools from the Hard Drive manufacturer website,
you need to download the right tool for your HDD specs.
Unzip it and make a bootable Floppy/CD/DVD and boot with it and test your
HDD, if it faulty it will tell you if not then you are safe and your
installation will be success.

Hi nass,

Thanks very much for your reply and your advice. I have back ups of my files
which are fairly up to date and thankfully I have managed to do new back ups
this morning.

I can't find the details of the maker of my C drive though. I know the other
one I have in there is a Maxtor. I think the C drive is working OK and I am
going to have a go this afternoon at the reinstall.
