Does Word have a feature similiar to Excel's HLookup or VLookup? I want to
reference a bookmark (which is an item number entered by the user) and have
the description for the item returned in another field.

No, but a cross-reference may give you what you want. Select Reference from
the Insert menu and then select Cross-reference. If the user used a
numbered style to create the numbers, then you may be in luck.
