Deregistration of the DNS record

I needed to dcpromo /forceremoval a domain controller in an existing forest
due to replication problems and dns issues. I removed most of the meta data
from the other domain in the forest except the data that is producing the
following errors.

Event Type: Error
Event Source: NETLOGON
Event Category: None
Event ID: 5775
Date: 5/10/2007
Time: 3:10:41 PM
User: N/A
Computer: CHIPPER1
Description:
Deregistration of the DNS record '_kpasswd._udp.chplus.health.state.ny.us.
600 IN SRV 0 100 464 CHIPPER3.chplus.health.state.ny.us.' failed with the
following error:
DNS server unable to interpret format.
Data:
0000: 29 23 00 00 )#..
--

I can't find a reference to this record anywhere using the dns manager. I am
using Windows 2000 Advanced Server.

Are there any other cleanup tools to clean up DNS records that point to
non-existent domains?

Thanks,

Steve

What DNS servers are you using in TCP/IP of this machine?
May be all you need to do is delete the Netlogon.dns file.

I am using the DNS that with is installed when you install Active Directory
with DCPROMO.

I cleaned up the NETLOGON.DNS file that contained commented service records
( to various services that were located on
chipper3.chplus.health.state.ny.us.

Unfortunately, I still receive errors like the following.

Event Type: Error
Event Source: NETLOGON
Event Category: None
Event ID: 5775
Date: 5/11/2007
Time: 1:40:20 PM

Actually the file should be deleted as you removed AD from the server so the
file is no longer needed, only DCs should make netlogon registrations.

What was the DNS name of the AD domain it was in?

Thanks for your responing to my posts.

I originally had a DPPRD domain in a DPPRD forest and I added the CHPLUS
domain to the DPPRD forest because my goal was to eventually retire the DPPRD
domain in favor of the CHPLUS domain running on new servers and the like. I
had replicaion errors possibly because of a Bind DNS server running on the
internal network. I used the Bind server to as a forwarder but I do not
administer the Bind server and do not have much of a dialog with the
administrators. Weel I had replication errors I could not resolve so I wanted
to remove the CHPLUS domain from the DPPRD forest but it wouldn't gracefully
demote so I had to use DCPromo /forceremoval. I performed the meta data
removal routines on the DPPRD domain controllers. I have since promoted the
former CHPLUS DC to a DCE domain controller in the DCE forest so there is no
replication issues. However, I'm still getting those error messaged on he
DPPRD DC long after the removal of the CHPLUS domain. I'm just wondering what
is causing them to occur and how I might stop them. They don't really effect
the operation of the DPPRD domain. Everything works as it should. The error
messages just a reminder that something isn't quite right somewhere but I
can't figure out what is causing them.

Wow that was a chore to follow and I'm not sure I did.

I figured there has to be a BIND in the mix because of the message "DNS
server unable to interpret format. "

If you will delete the netlogon.dns and netlogon.dnb files and restart the
Netlogon service I don't think you see the message again.

I think the main problem is that there is no chplus.health.state.ny.us zone
on any Windows DNS server, and if there is, since the BIND does not
understand the DDNS registration format Windows servers use you get the
error.

Does the BIND server have a zone for health.state.ny.us?
If it does, you should have a delegations added to the BIND for the Windows
domains, if they fall in the same DNS tree. Previously this delegation would
have been for the chplus.health.state.ny.us subdomain, and assuming the new
domain is dpprd.health.state.ny.us, have that name delegated in the BIND
server to the Windows DNS having the full dpprd.health.state.ny.us zone.
Otherwise the BIND does not know how to handle these requests.
