Deployment Packages

All,

I am finding Microsoft's documentation weak on the deployment of applications. I am trying to figure out two things:

1. How to get values from the setup wizard to write to the registry and the app.config file.
2. The serial number templates. What are all my options available? I would like to create a serial number based off the user's name given during setup/

Anyone know where I can find some good info? All links are appreciated.
