Am I the only person who has ever wanted to deploy
messenger via group policy?? Come on people, help me
out!!!

I've recently dowloaded MSN Messenger 6.0 in the form of
this one file...setup.exe.

I've extracted this file and these are the contents.

bootstrap.exe - Unknown
InstMsiA.exe - MSIEXEC for Win 95/98/ME
InstMsiW.exe - MSIEXEC for NT/2000/XP
MsnMsgs.msi - MSI Installation for MSN Messenger 6.0

I've tried adding the file MsnMsgs.msi to my group policy
for it to install and recieve the following error...

"Add operation failed. Unable to extract deployment
information from the package. Run validation on the
package to ensure the package is correct."

Is this MSI not meant for GP? If thats the case, is
there another MSI file for MSN Messenger 6.0 that I can
use to install it via GP?

Or perhaps another method to deploy on a group of
machines?

Thanks a lot for your time.

Al

Probably not, but obviously not many others have been successful. I tried to
help one other person, but we didn't find the magick trick to make it work.

I have got it to work myself. I used Veritas MSI builder
that comes with WIN2K. Just run the builder, install the
app, then run the builder again. This will generate a new
msi file that you can deploy using group policy.

Plus i think the vast majority of us would love to be able to remove
messenger instead of deploy it. But of course, microsoft won't let you do
that without screwing up other software like Outlook and stuff. How
convienent. Now I can't stop these f'ing popups on some user's computers.
That you microsoft. You should be thankful that you can't get it on.
