no virus, set to system files only. It's gone crazy first it won't let me
run msPaint. Now it stops ws-ftp from running in the middle of a transfer.
Has anyone else experienced this?

Are you serious? Data Execution Protection. Been in XP since SP2!

Yes, I was serious. I've never had occasion to mess with it and of the tens
(hundreds?) of thousands of posts to this news group there are exactly 163
posts with "DEP" in the subject. My apologies for not recognizing such a
popular topic.

Me too.
DEP is killing my search indexing service.
I have no virus either.
There is a chance that a 3rd party component is messing up (search indexer
uses 3rd party resources to read proprietary file formats to extract text, I
think), but I have no way to diagnose which. Started about 2 weeks ago.
A real tragedy on Vista, on which I use the search index for Everything now.
