I am trying to take away the permission for a set of users to be able to
create new folders within a drive. If i go into special permissions and deny
'create folders' this also means that they only get read only access to any
files within a folder. I need them to be able to read/write/create/delete
files but just not create new folders - is this possible?

thanks

I'm not sure about Win2K but in Win 2K3 you right click the hard drive (or
folder) you are concerned with and select Properties and then the Security
Tab. Click Advanced. Then select the group of users you want to control and
click Edit. Then you are provided with many more detailed options such as
specifically denying the ability to create folders. Hope this helps.

thanks - i've tried that but unfortunately by denying create folders it makes
every file you open in that folder read only! do you know if i have to just
make sure that it applies to this folder only as opposed to folders,
subfolders and files?

That's unfortunate. Have you tried looking through group policy options to
see if there is something to fit what you need?

i've actually just figured this out if anyone's interested! you have to
creat two separate permissions one for 'this folder only' that denys creating
folders and then another for 'this folder, subfolders and files only' that
gives them full control. That way they can view, edit, create documents etc
but can't create new folders! hopefully now i've figure this out it will
help someone else in the future.
