Hello Guy,
Whatever you do, (installing and updateting or unistalling) always as a
adinistrator.

Can you gº to Windows Update, select Express (Get high-priority updates),
and apply all offered updªtes
http://update.microsoft.com

Once that is finished, can you verify the update installs?

There are many pre-requisite files which are needed from windows update and
signature update with windows defender will fail until you hªve these files.

For the benefit of the community reading this post, please rate the pºsts.

I hope this post is helpful.

Let us know how it works ºut.

One thing to add: also have it "checked " in Msconfig to work in the back
ground. Many times i will go there and check for ,lets say invalids. I do
always check for updates always and it is good that you pointed out to
check history. I have since updated Defender, but the icon still has "!"
marked on icon to bring attention to looking into it , even after updates
you would think that would disappear after updating. Thank you Engel

Hi Guy,

I'll said, wait 2 o 3 days, before the icon with the exclamation disappear,
otherwise see this KB.

“Windows Defender definitions haven’t been updated”
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918355

Good luck

Thanks Engel.
I have had same problem as Guy several times since starting to use Defender
B2 after it replaced MS AntiSpyware.
I used the KB link (remove definitions and then Check for Updates) and it
sorted my problem - again.
However, it does appear to be a recurring problem and I think it needs some
further investigation by the Beta Team since I have Defender setup to
automatically run daily and to check for updates before running the scan.
I would have thought that if it checks for updates and finds some then, for
my peace-of-mind, it should get on with it and let me know that it has done
so.
The "yellow !" on the Defender Icon in the tray (suggesting my definitions
are out of date) should never appear if I have set up for automatic updates -
surely!
Thanks.
