Hi,
On a Dell 530s with WinXP SP2 there seems to be a problem with the HDD and
after several attempts at fixing this error,
it leads me to believe the Standby function is at fault.
For example the mouse, Intellimouse Explorer 3.0, it doesn't light up nor
respond after resuming from standby - but is easily fixed by unplug-plug the
usb cord.
However, after resuming from standby I notice that the HDD access is noisier
and lately I've run a chkdsk and got the following error:
Running CHKDSK in read-only mode.
CHKDSK is verifying files (stage 1 of 3)...
File verification completed.
CHKDSK is verifying indexes (stage 2 of 3)...
Index verification completed.
CHKDSK is verifying security descriptors (stage 3 of 3)...
Security descriptor verification completed.
Correcting errors in the master file table's (MFT) BITMAP attribute.
Correcting errors in the Volume Bitmap.
Windows found problems with the file system.
Run CHKDSK with the /F (fix) option to correct these.
Strange thing is that I've run chkdsk at startup, used Seagate's disc tools
with the 'long test' and neither found an error.
Previous time this happened, restarting Windows led to errors which
prevented IE7 from starting (EventViewer errors like "Faulting application ,
version 0.0.0.0, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address
0x00000000.") and several programs were not running starting at all.
Couple of restarts later, everything was back to normal. I've run several
Anti-Virus programs and spyware (Avira, mwave, spywareTerminator,
hijackthis) but didn't found anything.
Is the HDD bad or something else?
Thanks,
John
