I've got a Dell 962 and have a similar situation. My solution has been:

1) When the driver pops up a window warning that ink is low you can check a box
instructing it to no warn you about it anymore.

2) Black electrical tape placed over the blinking red light on the printer itself.

Let us know if you find a more elegant solution?

Bill

Your grandfather would probably find it simpler to buy Dell ink
cartridges. (You and I may think the trouble of refilling old
cartridges is worth the trouble: he may not, especially
when refillling does not allow him to print.) Some modern
cartridges include their own level-indicating chip, which
can be reset with a $20 gadget.

I'm sure there is a way... if there is not those free dell AIOs, when I
crunched the numbers, the cost of the ink was 2x to 3x that per volume
than other printers. Also similar per page as well. I don't mean to
be an unhelpful pig but money spent in another printer if you can't
refill this dell would be the most ecconomical, just about any printer
in the $100 to $150 range. Canon's are among the easier to refill,
though there are not really any options presently for aftermarket
cartridges yet. Epson have semi-decent refillable cartridges out
there. HP at the very least, though not so easy to refill there are a
ton of refilled options out there.

Dell is well, Lexmark with a funny shape that you can't buy in stores
and I don't know where to get refilled lexmarks.

AFIAK, not Lexmark, which is Dell'd printer OEM. The cart has a serial
number, which the printer remembers, but it will remember up to 4.
