Latest rumour that Dell is going to sell AMD. I guess we'll see if
this comes true or not. However, now that the rumour is out, Intel
will likely put a stop to that.

As I said the other 50 times someone said that Dell will offer
AMD-based systems: "I'll believe when I see it with my own two eyes".

The "proof" posted on this site was simply that Dell *briefly* had a
product page up showing Opteron processors available as a spare part.
That page is no longer on Dell's servers. Hardly what I would call a
ringing endorsement.

I'm not going to beleive that until I can actually buy one... And even when
I can I'll still just build my own ;-)

And from our nothing-happens-by-accident-department (and certainly not
at Dell, where I'm sure Michael Dell makes Donald Trump look like a
pussycat): what an _amazingly_ clever idea. Is it too late to give
the phenomenon a name: vaporware flashing, maybe?

But it took the analysts and "experts" by surprise, and it's got them
all confused now, so that's always an interesting sight. The debates
about what it means are now being aired publically:

http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,115366,00.asp

<quote>
The idea that Dell might be selling Opteron processors for some other
vendor's system was possible, but unlikely, says Gordon Haff, an
analyst with industry research firm Illuminata.

"If there really was an Opteron processor listing accidentally put up
on its site, that would lead me to believe there was something in the
works," he says. "It's not impossible that they would sell an Opteron
processor by itself from their Parts and Accessories Group, but a
processor is a bit different from a disk drive."
</quote>

Nobody really knows what to think. If this is another move by Dell to
scare Intel, then this is the most brazen and daring move yet by Dell.
To actually briefly sell something from AMD then take it out as soon
as Intel gets word about it.

There's even some frantic denials by company spokesman, like take a
look at this lame denial by an AMD "source":

http://insight.zdnet.co.uk/hardware/...9149856,00.htm

<quote>
"That part of Dell's Web site has off and on sold AMD components over
the years," said a well-placed source close to AMD. "I have no idea,
but they do. It is not an indication that Dell is about to start
selling AMD-based servers."
</quote>

This sounds so lame, it could be true, or it could be just lame. :-)

Dell is now claiming it was a gaffe<snigger>:
http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,115366,00.asp where there's a
link thru to Geek.com's "archive" of the Dell page.

The analysts and "experts" have been confused for ages! :>

FWIW, Dell also put up on a similar page a Shuttle small form-factor
barebones PC, but that certainly doesn't mean that they are actually
planning on selling such a system.

People are grasping at straws here to try and be the first on the
block to demonstrate the "proof" of Dell Opteron systems, just so they
can all say "See! I told ya so!" if by some odd chance Dell actually
DOES offer Opterons in the future.

I think you described it best in your last message as a "wardrobe
malfunction" :>

They never even sold the damn thing, just an odd-ball page that
probably got put up by accident. Dell probably has lots of pages like
this for products they aren't selling and probably never will sell,
but are at least examining. Everyone knows that Dell has Opteron
systems and is testing them, just like they had Athlon and K6 systems
before. However to say that they will actually sell such systems is a
rather large leap.

Long story short: Nothing to see here.. move along.

If that's the same thing as going out in public with your zipper down,
it still leaves open the question of intent. ;-).
