But it took the analysts and "experts" by surprise, and it's got them
all confused now, so that's always an interesting sight. The debates
about what it means are now being aired publically:

The idea that Dell might be selling Opteron processors for some other
vendor's system was possible, but unlikely, says Gordon Haff, an
analyst with industry research firm Illuminata.
"If there really was an Opteron processor listing accidentally put up
on its site, that would lead me to believe there was something in the
works," he says. "It's not impossible that they would sell an Opteron
processor by itself from their Parts and Accessories Group, but a
processor is a bit different from a disk drive."

Nobody really knows what to think. If this is another move by Dell to
scare Intel, then this is the most brazen and daring move yet by Dell.
To actually briefly sell something from AMD then take it out as soon
as Intel gets word about it.
There's even some frantic denials by company spokesman, like take a
look at this lame denial by an AMD "source":

"That part of Dell's Web site has off and on sold AMD components over
the years," said a well-placed source close to AMD. "I have no idea,
but they do. It is not an indication that Dell is about to start
selling AMD-based servers."

This sounds so lame, it could be true, or it could be just lame. :-)
