I'm having a problem with getting a DELL Latitude D505 to install via RIS.
I keep getting that old favourite you've not got the correct Nic drivers
error. I have done all the usual steps that correct this problem but the
bloody thing still gives the error.

I have images of DELL GX60's and GX270 that work fine and the D505 uses the
same drivers as the GX60, except the D505 uses the Pro 100 VE NIC. I have
downloaded the correct driver set from Intel and the special inf file that
you need for RIS installs. As I said the setup should be exactly the same
as the GX60, and I have done everything the same as the GX60,
grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Does this laptop have an integrated NIC with the mini-PCI
specification? According to Mark Minasi's "Mastering W2K
Server", 3rd ed., p.153 laptops do have the problem of not
necessarily being PXE enabled or being able to use the
RBFG floppy disk. Is this the problem you're running in
to? Are you using the latest RBFG.exe file available or
does any of this apply to you?

I plugged in "RIS How To" in the KB search engine under
Windows 2000.

Nope the laptop images just fine I just have the problem with the Nic
drivers. As I said I have imaged loads of DELL's GX60's 50's 270's 260's
most have an Intel Nic and you need to add drivers, I've done everything the
same way as I normally do, but the D505 just doesn't want to play!
grrrrrrrrrr

The only thing I can think of is the fact the problem
you're having is with a laptop while the others you've
been able to image have been desktops. This is what
Minasi talks about in his book.

You might try, if you haven't already, posting to his site
at: http://x220.minasi.com/forum/default.asp . They've
helped me before.

Hang in there, I feeeel your grrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Hey up,

Without reading Minasi I suspect that he probably talks about laptops using
PC Slot Cards, the DELL has a built in Intel 100VE NIc that is fully PXE
compliant, and I know other people have imaged the D505 just fine, its a
problem that I appear to be having. We should have some more D505's
arriving soon with XP rather than w2k SP4 so I'll try my luck with them.

Cheers

Kerry
