DELL inspiron's mouse and win XP pro

I have a Dell inspiron 7000. Original operating system
is win98. All works good. Bought a larger hard drive
and win xp pro and installed same. All is good but I
cannot get the mouse to work, nor can I get the touchpad
to work. I installed the latest drivers for the external
mouse (4.12) and the synaptec drivers for the
touchpad...still not working, mouse just sits in center
of the screen.

Any suggestions?
