I have a Dell 9300 (inspiron) with their external tv tuner, and media center.
I get the video from my sat no problem through the system, but want to
capture some video through this device.
I get the error many others have noted: "Video Device is currently in use,
yada yada"

Will not movie maker do this for me? I figured it was simply another
device. BTW: there are no firewire ports on the Dell external TV tuner. It
is USB only.

the video coming into the tuner needs to be captured as a recorded TV file
and then converted into something Movie Maker can use.

see the Import Movie Source Files > Video > Recorded TV page of my website..

Windows media center will capture it, but I have no way to open that file in
movie maker, as windows/microsoft does not show you where it is stored and I
don't know the file type either...?

Hi
I'm not familiar with that specific external USB TV tuner.
Usually external USB tv tuners will have their own on-board
hardware encoders etc, and will produce an Mpeg2 file -
which will not be compatible with WMM.
And again, *usually*, such USB hardware (I know hauppauge
and Avermedia do) will be supplied with their own basic
capture software, and a basic version of an Mpeg editing
app, such as Ulead or Roxio? (which you can use to create
a WMM compatible WMV or AVI)
With the external USB tuners (DVB) that I've experiance of
they produce a codec dependent Mpeg2 file.

I always duck the issue with Dell products, and always
guide the enquirer to:
