Dell Computers

Yesterday a friend of mine completely crashed a Dell computer with one of
the beagle virus. We elected to just format the c drive since it was a new
computer and didn't have much in the way of data on it. Did I learn
something~~!!

Normally you use the F8 key to get to the CD boot menu. - Not with Dell it
is F12. It is F2 to get to the bios menu. We finally got through the XP boot
menus and formatted the c: partition and loaded the XP operating system.
Then came the *fun*. There were about 5 drivers missing so you get out the
dell driver disk and go into install new hardware and nothing works. The
driver disk comes up in a menu totally weird. Over on the left side of the
screen are some pull down menus with different model of Dell computers.
Gotta select the model you are working on and then in the bottom pull down
select drivers and a new screen appears with a list of different drivers.
Gotta open each driver and hit extract to extract the zip file and then the
install button to install it. I still don't know if I installed drivers that
were not needed but the system worked.

Just some information on Dell. Seems some people have had trouble and when
you get someone they reside in India, which is OK but sometimes they just
don't know all the "tricks" and suggest new software or hardware when it is
unnecessary.

Just on the off chance this might help someone!!!!!

Every computer I have had used F12 to get to the boot menu. F8 to boot in
Safe Mode.

If it was a *new* computer, Dell would have walked your friend through all
the steps as per the warranty.

You are giving Dell support more credit than they are worth ... at least the
ones I've had to deal with, imho.

why do I getting the STRONG feeling this is a Dell based post.....
Dell "tech support" is widely known for their "format and re-install
XP"...after you wait hours on hold to speak to someone...

Only in the US, Bruce. Pity.

We in Canada get directed to you-know-where when we call support.

If it is a fairly new DELL why didn't you just use the 'restore' CD and let the system do the work ?

Because:?:
Newbies tend to panic because they don't know the ins & outs yet or are
perpetual newbies on purpose. Either way, they complain before they think.
IF it's not a troll here, it's a newbie who apparently solved his own
problem the hard way. That's fine but what's not fine is the bitch that
followed. It's called human nature.

I used to be human too!
