Some web searching shows that Dell has kept the Lexmark proprietary
lock-in, but switched it so you can only use Dell ink. (It's things
like this that make me wonder why people love Dell and keep going back
for that type of abuse.)

suggests that you can buy Lexmark ink and switch the Dell "lids" onto
the Lexmark cartridges. That's unlikely to be very practical. There
are places that sell refilled ink which may cost less.

Buy him a used laser for the price of a couple of ink cartridges. If he
needs color printing, check the supplies cost first.
