I get the Dell screen then it goes to a black screen with the cursor in the
upper left.

I tried the restore disk and I get the message about checking the system and
then it goes black with the cursor in the upper left.

I am able to use the system diagnostic disk and run the diagnostics. I ran
the full test and the video card, memory and HDD passed all tests. The CD
drives and FDD failed because I did not have any media in the drives.

Dell suggested changing the video card -- no change.

I connected the HDD to another computer (as a second drive) and I can read
all of the files.

Thanks,
Norm

Try pressing F8 as soon as you power on and then try booting
to Safe Mode. You can troubleshoot in safe mode. It may be
that some program or virus is hanging up the booting
process, safe mode should by pass that. Run a virus scan in
safe mode.

I believe that is one of the things I tried, but I will give it another
shot.

Thanks, Norm

I had the same problem and I replaced the power supply. That fixed it.
Working great now
