Anyone know how to get this printer to function without the optional
paper tray.
If I remove it I get a "tray 1 must be 250 sheet" error and the printer
stops.
As far as I'm aware it's exactly the same printer as the 3000 which
doesn't have this tray.
I've spoken to dell but their call centre was no use.

It can't be done. While they are based on the same engine, the 3100 is
NOT exactly the same printer. The 3000cn is incapable of using the
4000 page toner carts that the 3100 uses. Dell made these changes
deliberately. The 3100 will NOT operate without the paper tray, so it
ISN'T 'optional'.
