I recently went into the Control Panel's "Add or Remove Programs
selection and found two programs that I never used. They were Java2
Runtime Environment SEv 1.4.2_05 and 1.4.2_06 ... each of those
programs were using over 105 megs of hard disk space and I wanted to
get rid of them to free that space up.

My hard drive said that it had 40% free space before the deletion and
43% free space after I deleted them.

The problem came the next day when I checked my free space and found
that it had dropped back down to 40% ... I have no idea how this
happened and it seems to be the very same amount of space that I had
gained by deleting the two Java programs.

Does anyone have any experience in this area? How can I find out what
exactly is on my hard drive and how can I safely remove all the stuff
I don't want?

You probably do use the java runtime environment... Ever see a little coffee
cup in the notification area when you visit a website? As for your missing
space I don't know the size of your drive (I suppose I could figure it out)
but if 105 MB is 3% of it then, well, it could be anything from newly
created temp files to all sorts of stuff. What's in the recycle bin? Temp
files? IE's TIF?

Hi Galen,

I solved the problem. When I deleted those two humungous java files
(which I hadn't used since sometime in 2003) there were directories
and files associated with the 2 programs still in the System Restore
directory. I turned off System Restore and turned it back on again
and voila I regained my free space...now those drive space hogs are
gone for good .

I do have a Java program ... J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4 ...
Sun's most recent one. That's the one that's involved with the coffee
cup. The two I deleted were something that I had on my hard drive
that were never being used ... like I said, it had been 2003 since I
last used them and each one was taking over 105 megs ... that's over
200 megs for the pair ... and they weren't doing me a bit of good.

You might want to check your Add/Remove Programs list and see if you
have them listed there and then see when you last used them.

They are:

Java2 Runtime Environment SEV 1.4.2_05 and
Java2 Runtime Environment SEV 1.4.2_06

Good idea I supose but, well, I never install Java from Sun any longer. I
don't really need any of it's features, don't develope it, and don't want to
add the additional processes to the PCs I own.
