Deleting Table of Contents

I am working on a document with a table of contents. At one time the table
of contents worked but now it is totally messed up. It was originally
created in Word 2003 but is now saved as a Word 2007 document. I would like
to delete the whole thing and start over. Unfortunately, when I try to
delete it, I can't, as the option is not highlighted. In another document, I
manually deleted the TOC, (which I think might have been a poor choice) and
I'm still having issues trying to build a TOC. Can anyone help me with both
issues?

The way to delete a TOC is to select the entire thing (or the TOC field if
you have field codes displayed) and press Delete.

To delete a table of contents, just select it and press the Delete button.
Note that if you used the ribbon to create the TOC, it is likely to be inside
a content control. To delete the control, you may have to select a paragraph
before and after the actual TOC as well.

The general principles for TOC creation in Word are described at
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/toc/CreateATOC.html.
