How can I stop my son from deleting/moving start menu (XP Home) items. He
gets told not to do it, but you know kids, in one ear out the other. I have
him on a limited account. I thought XP was supposed to be that each user had
their own customized start menu. He keeps moving things from the start menu
to his desktop... very annoying!

Tell him NO one, and only one time. If he violates that - no computer for a
week. If he violates it again - no computer for a month. Third time - no
computer for a year.

Geeeze - raising kids is sooooo easy when parents ALWAYS say what they mean
and mean what they say!

"Johnie - pick up your toys! Johnie - I told you to pick up your toys!
JOHNIE - I'm going to count to 10 and you had BETTER . . . ."

What does Johnie learn? He learns not to let mom/dad get to 10. He does
not learn to do what he's told. He also learns that he has options of
whether, or not, to do what he's told. If he's to have an option - ASK him.
If you TELL him he MUST do it and do it NOW!

Yep, kids not doing as they're told is annoying and your word should be Law.
But, does he have his name on the welcome screen? If so then he should have
his own Start Menu and anything he moves/deletes from it should not affect
your Start Menu. I have 5 users on my box, all limited accounts except me,and
no 2 Start Menus are the same.

If you're giving him an account let him run it his own way. If he knows how
to move/delete items from the Start Menu he probably knows how to put them
back - if he wants to. So what if he moves things to the dektop? I've done
that, saves having to open the Start Menu to access them! I've deleted items
from the Start Menu too, they're always accessible from All Programs.
Let him enjoy his computing and stop being such a nag!

XP Pro??

Start | Run | Type: gpedit.msc | OK |
Navigate to...
Local Computer Policy\User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Start Menu
and Taskbar\
Prevent changes to Taskbar and Start Menu
[[Removes the Taskbar and Start Menu item from Settings on the Start menu.
This setting also prevents the user from opening the Taskbar Properties
dialog box.

If the user right-clicks the taskbar and then clicks Properties, a message
appears explaining that a setting prevents the action.]]

Also...
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explore
r
The registry entries are DWORD values. A value of 1 is enabled, and a value
of 0 is disabled.

Policy: Disable changes to Taskbar and Start Menu settings
Description: Removes the Taskbar & Start Menu item from the Control
Panel, and removes the Properties item from the Start menu (and button)
context menu.
Registry Value: "NoSetTaskbar"

Hope this helps. Let us know.

You are correct, Home has no gpedit.msc. That's why I asked if you had Pro.
I should've explained that better. ;-)
