Deleting read mail in windows mail

When reading emails in Windows Mail I want to delete them after finishing.
However, when I delete from the open email it opens the next email. I don't
want the next email to open on its own. How to I change the settings so the
next email will not automatically open when I delete the one I have read?

Thanks

Don't delete from the opened email window. Close the window, then
delete from the message list.

That is what I do already! I want to delete the mail and then open the next
mail "I" want to read instead of the next one automatically opening. It may
be something I don't want opened. I have Outlook set-up this way, and just
wanted to know if there was a setting in Windows Mail to do the same way.

Are you talking about the next email opening in the preview pane?
If that bothers you, you can turn off the preview pane: View, Layout...

Yes, I have the preview pane turned off. Say I have 5 unread e-mails, I read
the first one, if it is something I don't want or need to keep, I click the
delete (x) icon. The program then automatically opens the next e-mail for
reading. That is what I don't want to happen. I don't want e-mails opening
like that because the next one may be one that I don't want to read, don't
trust to open, or may be spam. I simply delete those without opening. But the
setting now opens the next email if you delete the one you are reading. No
big deal deleting them after I close them, but I want to choose which emails
I want to open. Does that make sense?

If you have the preview pane turned off, then you are opening a message
by double-clicking on it from the message list. When you are done
reading that message, close the reading window, and delete that message
from the message list. The next message should not open automatically.
As I suggested previously, don't delete from the reading window.
