I was trying to install a piece of hardware and my system crashed, so I
install Windows 2000 again and now I have 2 versions of Windows 2000.
Although I believe nothing is happening in the original version I have
hesitated to remove it due to fear. But now my computer is running slower
and I don't know what is causing it, so I am trying to eliminate certain
things. I am running Windows 2000, Service pack 4, 512 memory and a 40GB
hard drive.

Now my DVD player is acting like it has no memory to run, when before it was
running fine and I have to task manager out of a lot of things.

I have partitioned off my drive and now a can't reconfigure to add more HD
space to the C:/.

Also, programs running in the background, which one can I get rid of and
which ones to keep.

Thanks

Here is a safe way to remove an old version of Windows:
- Start the version you wish to retain.
- Rename the folder where the old copy resides, e.g. c:\WinNT to
c:\WinNT.old
If you get the wrong folder then you won't be able to rename it!
- Wait a week.
- If all is well, delete the renamed folder.

You need to tell us what's running in the background before
we can tell you what to get rid of.

Do you have an up-to-date virus scanner? A firewall?
A spyware killer? Download and run AdAware and
see if it makes a difference!

Thanks for the advice on the older version of Windows 2000; as for the rest --

I am not really sure what is running in the background except what comes up
on boot up, which is Unplug/Eject Icon for USB port, My wireless connecting
Icons, speaker controls, Burner software, 2 printer controls, camera
control, winzip, Nortons Antivirus; pop up blocker and sometimes the windows
update. Those are the Icon on the right side of my task bar, the left side
in desktop, media player, outlook express 6, IE 6,quick time player and
outlook (which I don't use). Those are the ones I see, I know there are some
I don't see.

I have Nortions System Works 2002 in which I update the virus definitions
often. I have a firewall between my network and the outside world. I have a
wireless router on the the win2k computer and the homebase on my main
computer. I run ad ware and I have AdAware. I don't know what else to do.
I had the perfect computer until I tried adding a piece of hardware that said
it works on win2k. The piece of hardware was a DVD writer. Thanks again for
the advise, I believe I just might shoot the computer instead. (just kidding)

Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, then click the Performance tab. Now
check which of your processes is eating up CPU time.
