I got a notification from XP that space on my OS drive was low. That
was true: I had ~25GB used and ~0.8GB free.

So, I'm uninstalling stuff that I no longer use, but that doesn't
seem to make a significant difference.

I'd like to uninstall $NtUninstallxxxxx$ files, because there are
about 20 of them, each occupying ~0.3GB, with most installed in 2005
and unchanged subsequently.

It appears I only need to uncheck their read-only and hidden
attributes. I am confident I'll never want to revert to the state of
my XP installation years ago. Is there any gotcha I haven't thought
of?

If you beleive that you will never want to uninstall those hot fixes then
delete them

Have you considered a bigger hard drive?

Folders that have uninstall as part of the name (for example $NtUninstallKB282010$ which
reside in C:\windows (hidden folders) are Window Hot Fix Update folders/files) can be
safely deleted (providing you never wish to uninstall the updates). I would recommend
leaving these folders for a period of at least a month to make sure the update is working
correctly.

These updates can be deleted individually or in multiples. To find out more about the
update/s go to:

NB: XXXXXX = the actual number not including the "Q" or "KB"

Once you have deleted the uninstall folders/files, then go to Control Panel, Add/Remove
Programs. Select the matching Windows Hotfix Title relating the update folder/file you
have just deleted and select remove. You will get a Windows error. This is because you
have deleted the uninstall folder/files. Just choose OK and the entry will be deleted from
the Add/Remove Programs Listing.

No offense Richard,

Get a larger HD. I doubt you can find a 25GB very easy. I should kind of
know, as I'm running an 80GB HD,(far from full, 86% free), but even they are
getting hard to find.

Even if you do get rid of the $NtUninstallxxxxx$ files (.3gb by your
estimation) you will still be woefully short on available disk space.
Running a Windows installation with too little free space is asking for
problems! You should really consider buying a bigger hard drive. In
the meantime, you should also look in your profile folders, there is
probably room to be found in there.

Actually, It's only the "Windows" partition that's 25GB ... the hard-
drive is 200GB. In addition, there's a 19GB secondary hard-drive.
Maybe I'll expand Windows partition some time ... for now, killing
year-old "uninstalls" will do just fine.

As I mentioned to the previous responder, the 25GB is merely the
"Windows"partition on a 200GB drive. I like to keep all my
applications on other partitions. But I get lazy too often and let
installers populate this partition rather than redirecting the
application proper to another partition.

Thanks for responding.

As I mentioned to the previous responder, the 25GB is merely the
"Windows"partition on a 200GB drive. I like to keep all my
applications on other partitions. But I get lazy too often and let
installers populate this partition rather than redirecting the
application proper to another partition.

I think deleting about 20 of these years-old "uninstalls" at .3GB each
will give me 6GB free in the Windows partition, which should be fine
for a while. Anyway, it's easier than expanding the partition.
