I highlight the writing I wish to delete, however when I press "Delete"
the writing remains and nothing happens. I have to use “Cut” or
“Backspace” to delete the highlighted words. I used to be able to highlight
and hit delete and that did it. Can anyone tell me how to get back to that?

Select Tools > options > General tab and turn off the two check boxes that
refer to WordPerfect.
