deleting extra spaces in salutation of mail merge

Hello,

I have the following fields in the salutation of a mail merge:
Dear <<Title>> <<Fname>> <<Lname>>: with spaces between the fields of course. When writing someone informally, e.g. Dear John:, the extra space between the unnecessary last name and the first is included. How have some of you all handled this? Thanks.
