Close Word and Outlook. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL and see if there are any
instances of Winword still running. If there are, shut them down.
Delete any orphan temporary files -

You should now be able to rename normal.dot to normal.old. If not reboot and
try again. If you still can't rename it, come back and I'll tell you how to
rename it via DOS.
You may find that with the orphan temporay files removed you can open your
docment.
