Deleting and Purging Messages in Outlook 2003

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium with Microsoft Office 2003 which
contains, of course, Outlook 2003. I have IMAP set up with several G-mail
accounts. When I an within a folder (I think I am in the folder. If it is
possible that I am not, how do I ascertain that I am in it?) and delete a
message, I get the message struck through and when I try to purge it using
the command in the Edit menu, it asks me if I am sure I want to delete
permanently. I answer in the affirmative. But nothing happens. Nothing at
all. Any ideas?
