it deletes the text that is already there and replaces it with wh.

When I am does typing a paper, and I try to go back and edit or add text to
it, it deletes the text that is already there and replaces it with what is
currently typing

Sounds as if you have word set to overtype mode instead of insert mode.
Hit the insert key to the right of your backspace key and it should toggle
over. There is also a way to do this through the drop down menus however I am
not sure on the process.
