Deleted messages reappear

If I delete messages from my inbox, exit Outlook, then go back in, the
messages reappear. I've tried Ctrl-Del to bypass the deleted folder, but they
still reappear. I've even used the menu to deleted the deleted folder items,
but there they are back again when I re-open Outlook. What's going on?
