My desktop is getting difficult to use because there are too many icons on
it. I've run the desktop cleanup wizard numerous times, manually moved the
icons into the "unused icons" folder etc. The deleted icons just keep coming
back.

might check the properties of the programs the icons belong to to se if there is a icon on desktop option that would be activated when the program is run at startup or otherwise.
