I have many recurring events set up. I can delete them one at a time, but
how do I delete the ENTIRE recurring event?

r-click on an instance and then select delete, pick "series"

Doesn't sound like it is a recurring event any more, could you have
exported and then imported them or something like that to turn them into
individual events?

Switch to a table view, like All appointments - do you see one or several
appointments for the ones you think are recurrences?
