Can I delete this file and have Outlook open up as if I had never used it
before? TIA

Rather than delete it, why not just rename it to outlook.bak? Then when you
open Outlook, you will have a chance to create a new .pst file.

If you want to delete it because of problems with it, why not tell us what
the problem is so someone may be able to help you?

The problem is I have gotten error messages to use the repair tool, which
has not worked. (My file is only 130 mb.) I went through and did an export
on all the message folders that were okay. I'm left with a couple which
don't matter much at this point, so that's okay even though I can't open
them. I've deleted all message folders I exported. I've tried all the
things I've read in all the messages I could find on a corrupt pst file and
nothing has worked. So I thought maybe I could just get rid of it and start
out like I'd never used Outlook before (although losing all my stuff in the
calendar is going to be a pain 8). I'll try the renaming and see what
happens.

If the first use of scanpst.exe doesn't work, try running it multiple times.
I have seen where running it 3 or 4 times will eventually fix the problem.

When you say that you have exported the okay message folders, what is wrong
with the remaining ones? What type of folders are they? Mail folders?
Contact or Calendar folders?

Before blowing away the .pst file, try exporting your calendar to a .csv
file and save yourself some grief there.

The whole idea of renaming your .pst file is to be able to put it back if
you need to get something.

Best thing of all right now, try creating a new mail profile and see if that
works.

The "bad" files were mail folders. I renamed outlook.pst to outlook.bak and
Outlook couldn't find it so processed nothing. I went back and renamed
*.bak to *.pst and voila! There it is - all of it. I do have to replace
some of the mail folders. I deleted the original ones as I exported them,
but can replace okay. I think I will try exporting the calendar to a *.csv
file though, just as a precaution while I have it running properly. Thank
you for the help. From now on, my important stuff gets saved to something
OTHER than a pst file!!!!!

You might want to copy your .pst file on a regular basis using the Pesonal
Folders Backup add-in from Microsoft Office Updates page. It will regularly
make a full (incremental, that is) copy of your file that you can store on
external storage or a second hard drive.
