I'm fairly new to computers and very new to Vista Home Premium. I've learned
that every newsgroup file I read ends up being stored somewhere in a
folder. (I learned this while using "Search" for a file). I can't seem to
delete the files I don't want. How can I get rid of them?

In windows mail:-

select tools > options > advanced

Click maintenance

tick the box that says remove messages after so many days and set it to
about 3 days

click the clean up now button
click either remove messages or delete messages depending on if you want to
keep the headers.
click close

I think that should cover it all.

You might also try this in Windows Mail: Right click on the newsgroup name
and choose "catch up." That will make it look like you've read all the
messages.
If you have your view settings set up so that Mail only shows unread
messages, then if you navigate out of the newsgroup and then back in, all
those message headers will be gone (but you may have some new ones in their
places).
