When I try to delete a folder a message popped up:

Cannot remove folder test: Access is denied. The source file may be in use

This situation does not change if I re-boot the Win2000+SP4 system.
Even if I move the locked folder into another folder and try to delete this
wrapping folder the same dialog window appears.

How can I delete this folder?

Paul

Take ownership of it as Administrator and you should be ok.

Perhaps boot into safe mode command prompt only? You could try that, or you
could just use a Good ol' DOS boot Floppy and Bypass Windows to do the delete.

Hi Paul - Sometimes you will find files which you are unable to delete
because they are in use. A program called Copylock, here,
http://noeld.com/programs.asp?cat=misc#CopyLock can aid in the process of
"replacing, moving, renaming or deleting one or many files which are
currently in use (e.g. system files like comctl32.dll, or virus/trojan
files.)" Another is Killbox, here:
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip
A third which is a bit different but often useful is Delete Invalid File,
here: http://www.purgeie.com/delinv.htm which handles invalid/UNC
file/folder name deleting, rather than the in use problem

Not if the system is using NTFS, and most do.

Hi,

Start/run cmd

Navigate (CD\) to the parent directory housing that folder, use RD /s q/
<directory_name> to remove it.

Hey Paul,
What's in this folder? Are there actually system files and other files that
are being used? Can you use task manager to halt the process? Have you tried
taking ownership of the folder as Administrators and try deleting it?
