hello

I just found some strange files in my system, which I
think are spyware ( one of them is in cookies folder),
when I try to delete them, I got the message:" cannot
delete (file name), it is being used by another person or
program", when i open properties of those files, the read-
only boxe is already unchecked. could you tell me how to
delete those files?

Try something like Ad-Aware which is free for personal use:

Hello Mr. Smith

I already have ad-ware version 6.0, but it cannot delete
those files. Could you tell me if there are other
software that can delete those files

What files are they specifically?

Have you got the latest update for Ad-aware? I think the latest reference
file is 01R299 22.04.2004.

NTUSER.DAT is a system file! That's why you can't delete that one. It
should be located in C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\

As for index.dat if it's in your cookies folder you could try just "delete
cookies" from Internet Options. Although I've got quite a few index.dat on
my machine, they don't seem to be up to anything suspicious.

For the truly paranoid (include me :-), go to this link from techtv the
screen savers and it will explain what .dat files are and how to delete them
if you want to. (I am not that paranoid).

If you think it's spyware, then it will be damn hard to
delete and you certainly won't be able to do it
conventionally. I got a bad case of ad/spy ware a while
back and the only way to get rid of it was to re-format
my system. There are some anti-spy ware utilites
(www.download.com) that will get rid of it for you, but
they cost money and it's tough to tell which programs are
good and which are crap.

I think you have to reformat your hard drive if you want
to get rid of the spyware.
