svchost 1144 An attempt to open the file system32\CatRoot2\edb.chk for read
only access failed with system error 23. Data error (cyclic redundancy
check). The open file operation failed with error - 1022.

I have tried to delete the file and recover the CatRoot folder to no
avail...same problem. I am afraid I need to totally refomat drove C. Any
ideas to solve this problem without reformatting the disk? I tried Recover
DOS command but that failed with a C drive lockout message.

Look for disk errors in the event logs. It sounds like you may have a bad
sector in a crucial area of the disk. If this is the case the disk is toast.

Woody

Please post a single copy of the Error / Warning Report appearing in
the System / Application logs in Event Viewer for the last time the
error occurred.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click for further information. You can copy using copy
and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no further
information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event Viewer.
Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the
message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report.
Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.
