I have one old Desktop Folder I can't Delete. It is for 'The Shield Antivurus
2006' which was uninstalled & replaced more than two years ago. It is not a
big deal - just a nuisance & frustration. How can I get rid of it?

- Is it a folder or an icon?
- What happens when you try to delete it?

Try:

Start>Run>regedit [enter]

Navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>Software>Microsoft>Windows>Current
Version>Explorer>Desktop>Name Space

See if there is an entry for The Shield. If yes, delete it.

It is just a folder. When I right click on it, only three items appear in the
menu -'Open', 'Explore', 'Create Shortcut'. When I click on 'Open' or
'Explore' nothing happens.
When I drag it to the Recycle Bin it just stays where it is.
I no longer have any Shield Antivirus programs, & none appear in the list of
All Programs. But when I go to Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs, the
Program listing still includes 'The Shield 2006 Professional'. When I click
on 'change/remove' nothing happens.

I tried this but found nothing that I could relate to The Shield. There is
just 7 long numeric/alpha keys.

Would you like to:

Remove all traces of The Shield 2006 Professional program from your
system?

It seems that in addition to your desktop presence, it is also in Add/
Remove Programs (not mentioned before)

It would not be hard to just remove the folder from the desktop, but
if it still in Add/Remove and should not be, that also needs to be
fixed, yes?

I know it was a while ago (over two years ago), but do you recall *how*
you uninstalled The Shield 2006? I know you were recently having
problems with The Shield Deluxe 2008. I wonder if the problems stemmed
from a faulty removal of the earlier version, resulting in a conflict of
some sort. I also know you have run registry cleaning programs, which
you now know can sometimes result in problems.

What happens when you open this desktop folder?

I have found that booting off a rescue CD (like Knoppix or UBCD4Win)
enables me to delete files and folders that are otherwise undeleteable.

Also, your subject line says "Delete Desktop Icons" (plural). But in
your most recent post, you say there is only one desktop *folder*. Just
want to be clear on that.

What happens when you use Windows Explorer to navigate to:

C:\Documents and Settings\[user name]\Desktop ? Does that folder appear?

This is sort of a moving target - with this The Shield Deluxe 2008
revelation by Daave.

I don't know if you have The Shield Deluxe 2008 installed or not, so
things may be mixed up now, but you can always reinstall 2008 if you
need to. Read all this first to see if it makes sense.

Backup your registry with this popular tool:

http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/

In your registry, navigate to here:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

All the Add/Remove entries are here. Click on each entry on the left
between the curly braces {} to see the contents on the right.

Pay attention to the DisplayName fields and determine where SD is
installed (or thinks it is). DisplayName is what you see in Add/
Remove. If you delete the key (the {} entry on the left) from under
Uninstall, you will not see it in AR again.

SD was probably installed in C:\Program Files\PCSecurityShield... or
something like that. If you do not have 2008, delete that folder. If
you have 2008, leave the folder.

At least now you know that the stuff will not show up in Add/Remove
anymore.

I would reboot now, check Add/Remove and make sure it looks okay.

Try to remove your desktop folder.

If it still won't go, try booting in Safe Mode to remove it.

If still no delete, use unlocker which you can download from here:

http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/

Install it, right click the folder, check for locks and make the right
choice.

See how this works for you. If not, we can keep going.

Hello again Daave - good to hear from you!

I don't want anybody to spend too much of their valuable time on this
matter. It is not a big issue. For two years or so I just 'park' it up in a
corner & ignore it. I just thought that there might be a simple solution to
this irritant.

I don't believe that it has anything to do with other recent problems on my
computer. It was there before & after my other problems, & my computer & all
my programs are running fine now.

I think it is an empty folder that somehow got stuck. Re 'plurals' - no it
is only one folder/problem. A new piece of info that may be relevant is that
the name of the folder appears in brackets - like this - [The Shield
Antivirus 2006]

The folder does not appear in any 'Documents and Settings' lists. It does
appear in the Windows Explorer\Desktop list. From there I'm not able to
Highlite the folder & use any Delete options off the Toolbar. 'Open' or
'Expand' has no response. I can't drag it to the Recycle Bin.

I have a very useful program - 'Unlocker' - which I have used to fix other
problem files/folders from time to time. When I tried to use it for this
folder, this folder did not appear in 'Unlockers' list of Desktop folders.

I don't want to get into complicated stuff like 'rescue CDs'. It is not
worth it. If there is not a simple solution, I can continue living happily
with this one irritant folder tucked away in a corner.
