The delete button shows on the tool bar but it appears to be "faded"

If you're talking about the Cut tool/button, it is available only when
something in the document is selected.

There is no "Delete" button, so like Herb I assume you mean the *Cut* button
- point to it & a tip box will tell you what it is:-)

If you want to permanently remove content from the doc that isn't the button
you want anyway. Select the unwanted text then press the Delete or Backspace
key or simply type the new content if the former stuff is to be replaced
with something else - you don't need to delete first.

Cut is to be used if you want to Paste that content to another location.
