I am taking my machine into the computer shop tomorrow to have the
motherboard replaced. It is running Vista Home Premium.

I have used the Backup Wizard to backup my data to a second hard drive and
then deleted my personal details from my User folder (These details include
very personal stuff, bank details, passwords etc)

However, anyone can easily use the Backup Restore facilty to restore my
personal data. I would therefore like to delete my backup from the backup
disk but this appears to be impossibe. I have even reformatted the Disk but
the backup is still there!!!!

Is there nothing I can do about this? Are my personal details stored
forever, or until I put a chainsaw through the drive?

Hi,

in order to properly delete a file backup in Windows Vista you can
refer to
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Win...033.mspx#ESAAC

Formatting your disk should cause all data to be purged, including the
backup data. Which folder, or indication, do you still see, on your disk
post formatting, that points to having backups present?

I've just got my machine back from the shop. The formatting of the disk
appears to have deleted the backup ok. What threw me was that you can go into
the Restore dialogue and still see all the names & locations of the files you
backed up even thogh they no longer exist.
I guess these references will disappear with time.
From my researches it does appear that the only way to remove files you have
deleted since making the last backup is a reformat. I've got nothing to hide
really, but I do like to have control of the data on my computer so I will
not be using the MS Backup feature again..

I've noticed that too. Very disconcerting. If Vista doesn't realize
the backup is gone, that could result in real trouble when it comes
time to do a restore.
