Delayed screeen freeze

A minute or two after startup (usually when I've managed
to write a few minutes' worth of text), the screen
freezes. The only recourse is to turn the machine (IBM
Netvista) off by holding down the power button for five
seconds. I've run Registry cleanups, searched for viruses
and spyware, uninstalled the Windows 2000 Service Pack 4--
still no joy. Any ideas, anyone?
