Delayed email sends with Gmail from Outlook

I've configured gmail with Outlook 2007 exactly as per instructions. When I
send an email from Outlook, there are no error messages but the email is not
received by the recipients for several hours. When I send the email directly
from Gmail, it is received by recipients right away.

Any suggestions or help greatly appreciated!

When you send from Outlook, does the messxage leave Outbox and move to Sent
Items right away? Is your Sent Items folder on the server? Do you scan
messages with an antivirus program?
