Delay in writing to word document over network.

I have a word document with 1,000 rows in a table with 20 columns. It
works fine when I access it locally, but when it's placed on the
server, there is a significant lag in the typing. Besides upgrading
the server, does anybody have any ideas on speeding up writing to this
document?
